How to Choose Your Drawing/Sketching Utensils

Have you always had the passion to draw, but never had the right utensils to do it? Well, here, you can learn what to expect from a fine quality sketch pencil and how to choose one!

Steps

  1. Make a decision. Make sure you want to spend the money to buy sketch pencil kits. It's not an extreme loss if you buy them but don't want them. Pencils are pencils!
  2. Visit a craft store. Drive down to a craft store, such as Michael's or Jo-Anne's, where you can kind of view the different varieties of art supplies they have to offer.
  3. Check out some supplies. You want to buy some well known brand pencils, so try looking for something like "General" art supplies, or "Faber-Castell". Be sure to check the box's contents or ask the cashier/manager if you can sneak a peek at the box's contents to make sure your picking the right box.
  4. Get'em and Go! Once you've selected your pencils, try them out. Take out some paper and test their characteristics (durability, texture, strokes, appearance, etc.).
  5. Get to work! If you feel that you're comfortable working with your new supplies, start on some art so you can get the feel of your utensils!

  • Try checking out some helpful books to start you out with some creative ideas on drawing.
  • Have fun with your art!

  • Don't spend too much on the art supplies and accessories!
  • Make sure the products are neither too expensive or too cheap, just so it fits your budget!
